The middle of three sons, he and one brother entered Fisk University at the same time during the fall of 1867 along with two young women. They became the first graduates of Fisk in 1875. Burrus's motivation to go to school came from an alleged statement made by John C. " This was the challenge that led them to success. They proved that a black person could easily solve a problem in mathematics and conjugate a Greek verb.
