Although digital media have accelerated the pace of change, the successive emergence and growth of “new” media forms throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first repeatedly generated defensive responses, couched in normative terms, from many of the established practitioners of the day.

The largest such organization, the Society of Professional Journalists, identifies four of them in its widely cited Code of Ethics: commitment to truthtelling, minimization of harm, independence, and accountability and transparency, that last norm added only in September 2014. Codes and guidelines from other professional organizations and news outlets are in much the same vein. 10 They therefore have an interest in positioning other entities as less crucial, and an excellent way to make the point is to brand them as less ethical – that is, less committed to norms that engender factualness, reliability, and so on.
